Giant Communal Spider Web

Scientists report that the massive 200-yard spider web recently discovered in Texas's Lake Tawakoni State Park was woven by spiders from many different species working collaboratively. Thousands of spiders have rebuilt the web three times after it's been torn up by rain and wind. Texas A&M University entomologist Allen Dean has identified spiders from such families as funnel web weavers, sac spiders, orb weavers, mesh web weavers, wolf spiders, pirate spiders, and others working on the web.

"Spiders generally are cannibalistic and keep their webs distinct," Dean said. "We're not sure what started the initial webbing ... but there probably have been thousands of spiders working on the web. With the amount of rain that has occurred this year and the huge food supply available, it just created the right condition for all of this."

This guy was bitten by a Brown Recluse spider.

The following illustrates the progression of a brown recluse spider bite. The affected skin actually dies on his body! Some of the pictures towards the end are pretty nasty, but take a look at the last one - it is a picture of the spider itself.

The Brown Recluse Spider is the most dangerous spider that we have in the USA. A person can die from it's bite. We all should know what the spider looks like:

Send this around to people you love, because it is almost summertime.

People will be digging around, doing yard work, spring cleaning, and sometimes in their attics. Please be careful. Spider bites are dangerous and can have permanent and highly negative consequences.

They like the darkness and tend to live in storage sheds or attics or other areas that might not be frequented by people or light. If you have a need to be in your attic, go up there and turn on a light and leave it on for about 30 minutes before you go in to do your work!

No, it's not a photoshopped image. But is it real?

spider2

Yes! It's real alright. Called “Maman,” this giant spider sculpture is 30 feet high and 30 feet wide, with an egg sac containing 26 marble eggs.

The artist is Louise Bourgeois.

A stainless steel version is currently on loan to the Tate Modern in London, and another six bronze casts are located at National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Samsung Museum of Modern Art in Seoul and Havana in Cuba. So, be on the look out!

Giant Spiders

Some facts about those giant spiders: They run 10 mph, jump three feet, are a nocturnal spider, so only come out at night unless they are in shade. When they bite you, you are injected with Novocain so you go numb instantly. You don't even know you are bitten when you are sleeping, so you wake up with part of your leg or arm missing because it has been gnawing on it all night long. If you are walking around and you bump something that is casting a shadow over it, and the sun makes contact with it, you better run. It will instantly run for your shadow, and scream the whole time it is chasing you.

PS. The one on the bottom is eating the one on the top. These are Spiders found daily in Iraq by troops. Imagine waking up and seeing one of these in your tent!!

Another Disclaimer

I found these pictures sitting in the My Documents folder in my computer. I have no idea how they got there or where they came from. It must have been a too much tequila not enough rational thinking kind of night. If one or more of them belongs to you and you don't want them here - I'll be happy to remove them.
