Zimbabwe Chapungu stone sculpture is a profound, deeply human expression of the African people that transcends time and space. Sculptors say their ancestors' spirits come in dreams and visions to reveal themselves in images that dwell within the stone.

These "voices in stone" can almost be heard through the awe-inspiring sculptures, which tell tales of life in traditional and contemporary works of art. In this way, sculptors release life within the stone and their spirits soar within the collective reality of the African people. Having visited the sculptures, viewers leave with the startling realization that they have been blessed by the stones' varied and emotional messages.

The Chapungu artists use non-mechanical tools, often handmade, to craft the stone. Due to its hardness, chisels, hammers, punchers, tile cutters and metal combs are used, as well as 60 to 800-grit emery paper. When the design is complete, the artist polishes the sculpture with clear wax to bring out the stone’s textures and natural colors.

Wow!

The pics are really great...I enjoyed it. African Art has something very special about it. African art has not changed dramatically from the Stone Age till today and this shows in the traditional designs of every type of art, be it African masks, African fabrics, African musical instruments, African ladies Handbags, African carvings and in fact all manner of African art and crafts. It is not that symbolic African arts and crafts are only desirable in Africa; this art form has a following worldwide.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.I loved the exhibit when I visited it here in KC.

I found these pictures sitting in the My Documents folder in my computer. I have no idea how they got there or where they came from. It must have been a too much tequila not enough rational thinking kind of night. If one or more of them belongs to you and you don't want them here - I'll be happy to remove them.
